Democrats are already talking impeachment, and President Donald J. Trump could not care less. Speaking with reporters Wednesday at the White House ballroom construction site, one day after the midterm elections, the President was asked whether impeachment came up and whether it worries him. His answer took two seconds: “Not even a little bit.”
Then he told Democrats exactly what it would cost them. “I think it would destroy the Democrat Party if they did that,” President Trump said. “Because impeachment for no reason, what, for having a successful country?” He did not stop there: “Our country is more successful now than at any time in its history.”
The question came on the morning after AP reported that Democrats won the House majority. The President has been here before. Democrats impeached him twice in his first term, and twice the Senate acquitted him. Last month he warned that Democrats would try it again for no reason other than his success, and on Wednesday he made clear that threat will not slow down his agenda by one inch.
The President already has his answer for a Democrat Congress. In a phone interview on election night, he said the power of the veto is “impervious” and that if Democrats “send over things that are insane,” he will veto them. With the veto pen in hand, the Golden Age agenda stays protected.
And the work goes on. The same day, President Trump stood with the crew that raised the final steel beam of the new White House ballroom, ahead of schedule and on budget, built without taxpayer money. That is the record Democrats would have to impeach: a booming country, a secure border and a President who keeps building. Patriots know which side of that fight they are on.
