President Donald J. Trump did not mince words on election night about Sen. John Cornyn. “Well, I had no choice. Ken Paxton was a good guy. And I just wasn’t a fan of Cornyn,” the President said. “You know, I just wasn’t a fan. I found him to be a disloyal guy.”
For President Trump, it comes down to who stood with him when it counted. “He was not a fan of mine when, you know, to be honest, when it wasn’t fashionable, he wasn’t there,” the President said. “When it wasn’t fashionable to be with Trump, he wasn’t there. When it was fashionable, he kissed my ass.”
“I remember the other days,” President Trump said, “and I just felt I couldn’t endorse him.” Instead, the President stood with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, the man he called “the greatest attorney general in their history” on the campaign trail last month.
The AP called the Texas Senate race Tuesday night for Democrat James Talarico over Paxton. The President still made no apology for his choice. He backs the people who stood with him and with the America First movement in the hard years, not only after it became popular.
It is a message every Republican in Washington heard loud and clear on election night. With a new Congress coming, President Trump is showing he remembers who was there and who wasn’t, and loyalty still matters in his party.
