Vice President JD Vance gave the clearest answer yet on what America expects of newcomers. Speaking at his Fox News town hall with Jesse Watters on Thursday, he said: “If you want to become an American, then become an American. Learn our language, learn our culture, learn our values, assimilate into American culture. That is the bare minimum that we expect of a newcomer into the United States of America.”

Vance said this sense that “we’re all part of the same American family, we’re all in the same American team” is “a precious thing,” and one “that too many of our leaders have taken for granted.” Mass migration, he warned, “will destroy” it “if we let it,” and “we’ve certainly saw some early signs of it during the Biden administration.”

He was clear that America has always welcomed people who came to contribute, but they came “when our leadership was self-confident enough” to expect them to become Americans. Then he called out the other side: “When I talk about Democrats being so weird these days, Abdul El-Sayed, James Talarico, the various people who are running all over the country is they actually reject the idea of assimilation.”

Vance shared a story from an emergency room visit with one of his young sons, where he found “like nine different translators for nine different languages.” His thought: “How about if everybody spoke English and we could hire more doctors and less translators in our country?”

“This is why we have the immigration policy that we do,” the Vice President said. “This is why Mike Rogers in Michigan and Ken Paxton in Texas … support that immigration policy that protects American identity. Don’t support James Talarico who wants to destroy it.” Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
