The Justice Department has a message for anyone trying to cheat on Election Day. “Anyone who’s voting unlawfully, voting illegally, they will be caught and we will prosecute them,” Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter said Tuesday.
McCotter explained what comes next after a ruling in California. “The district judge out in California said the remedy here is not a civil lawsuit, which is what we tried, but instead criminal prosecution,” he said. “And what he said is, get busier. Those are exact words.”
The Department is taking the judge at his word. “So, get busier in criminal prosecutions,” McCotter said. “So, that’s what we intend to do.”
For law-abiding Americans, the message is just as clear. “If you’re a citizen, you’re allowed to vote, you should vote, and we’ll make sure your vote counts,” McCotter said.
The White House’s Rapid Response team shared the clip Tuesday morning as Americans headed to the polls. Polls are open today, Tuesday, Nov. 3.
