The White House is having some Halloween fun with a serious message: under President Trump, people who steal from American taxpayers get caught. Its new Scooby-Doo cartoon, “the Mystery of Fraudster Shawty Dred,” ends the way every episode does, with the mask pulled off.
The real case is no cartoon. Federal prosecutors in Atlanta say Mercedes Reshard New, 39, who goes by “Shawty Dred,” used stolen identities to create more than 350 fraudulent SNAP accounts between January 2020 and July 2026, siphoning roughly $4 million in food assistance meant for families in need.
Prosecutors say about $660,000 of it ran through card readers at her own store, Shawty Dred LLC, from April 2024 until USDA revoked the store’s authorization in November 2025. They say the money went to vacations, clothes and jewelry.
A federal grand jury indicted New on Oct. 7 on 46 counts of mail fraud, 15 counts of aggravated identity theft, and counts of SNAP fraud and access device fraud. She was arrested Oct. 13. Like every defendant, she is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
The Trump administration has made rooting out SNAP fraud a priority, so the program serves the Americans it was built for. As the White House put it: “Fraudsters are getting unmasked this Halloween.”
