Vice President JD Vance brought good news for Kansas ranchers and grocery shoppers on Monday. “The Department of Agriculture is announcing millions of dollars in new grants towards 10 meatpacking facilities right here in the state of Kansas,” he said.

Vance explained why it matters. “For too long, and this is one of the reasons why prices can sometimes get too high, four companies, two of them by the way completely controlled by foreign interests, four companies have dominated the vast majority of American meat processing,” he said.

“And here’s what they do. They limit supply and they jack up the prices that Americans see at the grocery store,” the Vice President said. “President Donald Trump, myself, and Roger Marshall say that’s ridiculous and it’s gotta stop.”

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced $57,424,130 in 147 tentative awards across 40 states through its Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program, pending Congressional allotment. “We are focused on rebuilding the Great American Cattle Herd,” Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said.

More independent American processors means more competition, more choice for ranchers and lower prices at the meat counter. Sen. Roger Marshall summed it up: “Promises made. Promises kept.”
