President Trump wished María Corina Machado well on Sunday as the Venezuelan opposition leader returned home. Asked about her return as he left the White House, the President said, “I think she’s a very nice woman. She gave me her Nobel Prize. So how can I say anything else?”
“And I hope she’s safe,” Trump said. “She’s a very nice woman. But we’re doing really well in Venezuela.”
Machado came back to Venezuela after nearly a year in exile, a homecoming made possible after the United States removed Nicolás Maduro in January. Days after Maduro’s fall, she came to the Oval Office and presented President Trump with her Nobel Peace Prize medal.
In the same brief exchange on the South Lawn, the President declined to weigh in on Brazil’s elections and told reporters plainly on Iran: “There will not be a strike today.”
From Caracas to the Strait of Hormuz, the message is the same. American strength under President Trump is making the hemisphere freer and safer.
