President Trump is putting the American dream of owning a home back within reach. On Thursday, the President signed a new action to lower the costs of single-family homeownership and mortgages and to strip away the red tape that has priced working families out of the market. “RESTORING THE AMERICAN DREAM OF HOMEOWNERSHIP,” the White House announced.
The order goes straight at the hidden costs that pile up on homeowners. The Federal Housing Finance Agency will run a pilot to proactively cancel mortgage insurance premiums once a homeowner meets the equity requirements based on the home’s current market value, not what it was worth years ago. A pilot that waives title insurance requirements becomes permanent, cutting closing costs for families who refinance. The Department of Agriculture and the Department of Veterans Affairs are directed to lower the interest rates on their single-family home loans.
The President is also clearing the way for more affordable homes to be built. A new Task Force on Manufactured Housing Innovation, chaired by the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and the FHFA Director, will knock down the barriers that have held back one of the most affordable paths to owning a home.
Thursday’s action builds on a record of results. In January, President Trump banned large institutional investors from buying up single-family homes and ordered $200 billion in mortgage-backed securities purchases through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. He cut regulatory burdens on mortgages, cracked down on illegal immigration that drove up housing demand, and the Working Families Tax Cuts doubled the investment limit for the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit.
Vice President JD Vance laid out what is at stake. “Under four years of the Biden administration, the average cost of a home in the United States of America nearly doubled,” Vance said. Now, he said, “we’re finally seeing rents come down,” because the administration lowered the burdens to build and “we got illegal aliens out of the United States of America who are taking American homes.”
“The American dream should not be sold to the highest foreign bidder,” the Vice President said. “It belongs to you.” Under President Trump, Patriots who work hard and play by the rules are getting their shot at a home of their own again.
