Americans are feeling it. “We just had a consumer confidence report just came out,” President Trump told reporters on Tuesday. “It’s up at a record number, a record increase.”
“So that’s a great number,” the President said. “You don’t see that happen very often, not to that extent.”
The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index jumped 7.5 points to 91.7 in October, up from 84.2 in September, blowing past the 81 that economists polled by Reuters had forecast.
The gains were broad. The Present Situation Index rose 8.6 points to 120.4, and the Expectations Index climbed 6.9 points to 72.6. The share of consumers saying jobs are “plentiful” rose to 26.7% from 24.3%, and those calling business conditions “good” rose to 21.4% from 18.8%. Confidence improved across all political affiliations.
One week before Election Day, the numbers back up what the President has been saying on the trail: prices are coming down, jobs are there, and Americans are confident about where the country is going.
