First Lady Melania Trump has done what years of diplomats could not do for one battered town on the front line. The White House announced Friday that she secured a localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in Oleshky, starting Oct. 29, 2026, so humanitarian aid can get into the city and civilians can get out through a designated safe passageway.

“The situation in Oleshky is dire,” the First Lady said. She called it a “front-line war city on the brink of disaster,” home to “primarily elderly residents who urgently need medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water.” She added that “without my intervention, the possibility to bring humanitarian aid into the city and to evacuate the elderly would be impossible.”

Mrs. Trump serves as the Exclusive Intermediary between the two sides, using the channel she built through six earlier reunifications of 34 children. The White House said the Oleshky crisis came to her attention at her Fostering the Future Together event during the 81st U.N. General Assembly. An impartial American media organization will document the process.

Oleshky was home to about 24,000 people before the war. Today about 1,700 to 2,000 remain, including about 50 children, and about 90 percent of the city flooded after the Kakhovka Dam was destroyed.

On the South Lawn Friday morning, President Trump was asked whether the First Lady would join the trilateral peace talks. “No, but it’s not the worst idea I’ve ever heard,” he said. “What she wants to do is save children. And that’s her focus. Both sides are cooperating with her. So doing a very good job.”

Asked how it came about, the President gave her the credit. “Her initiative,” he said. “And they contacted both sides, and both sides wanted to do it.” The White House summed it up: “Our incredible @FLOTUS Melania Trump has forged a ceasefire in war-torn Oleshky. Peace through strength.”
