WASHINGTON — President Donald J. Trump promised big news on diesel Friday morning, and by afternoon he delivered. After a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the President announced that Russia will release more than 300,000 tons of diesel immediately, 500,000 tons in November and 1 million tons right after that, with another 3 million tons to follow based on the condition of Russia’s refineries. That is more than 4 million tons of fuel headed to American and global markets.
The administration moved at once. The Treasury Department issued a temporary general license Friday allowing Russian diesel to be sold, good through April 2027. The President made the stakes plain: “Between our TOTAL CONTROL of the Strait of Hormuz, and this great announcement on Russian Energy, Diesel Prices for Americans and, indeed, the World, will be COMING DOWN, IN RECORD NUMBERS, AND FAST! Lower prices for Americans, especially our Great Farmers, Ranchers, and Truckers, is my Greatest Priority.”
He previewed it hours earlier at the White House Columbus Day Celebration. “We have a big announcement coming up on diesel,” he said, praising Energy Secretary Chris Wright as the “best energy man in the country.” “We have, I think, some big news on that diesel situation. We’re going to be knocking the hell out of it,” the President said. “And the prices, the prices will come tumbling.”
This is the latest in a nonstop week of action for working Americans at the pump. On Monday the President signed an emergency order letting truckers and farmers run tax-exempt off-road diesel on the highways without federal penalties, and earlier he got G7 nations to release 100 million barrels of oil and diesel from their stockpiles. Supply is now flowing from every direction, with America in charge of the Strait of Hormuz.
For the families who haul America’s freight and grow America’s food, help is on the way. Friday’s deal adds millions of tons of fuel to a tight world market, and the President has made clear he will keep using every tool he has until prices are back down where Americans want them.
