WASHINGTON — The thank-yous are pouring in. A day after President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order on stage in Grand Island, Nebraska, authorizing highway use of tax-free dyed diesel and deferring the federal diesel excise tax through the end of the year, the people who feed and move America are lining up to praise him. The White House says the order could save drivers as much as $100 per fill, right when harvest needs it most.
“President Trump signed an Executive Order right here in Nebraska to lower diesel costs for American farmers, truckers, and workers,” said White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. “Promises made. Promises kept.” Vice President JD Vance called it “another example of President Trump acting quickly to tackle an urgent issue,” and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins put it simply: “President Trump is the most pro ranching and farming president in our lifetime.”
Farm country agrees. “We thank President Trump for recognizing that what happens at the fuel pump directly affects what happens on the farm and therefore at dinner tables across America,” said American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall. “Every cent per gallon matters when you’re running a fleet of grain trucks or hauling cattle hundreds of miles… We appreciate that the president listened to farmers and responded.” The American Soybean Association thanked the President for an order that “seeks to address high fuel costs impacting our bottom lines.”
Governors who had already acted in their own states cheered the national win. “Thank you, President @realDonaldTrump!” wrote Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry. “This is a HUGE WIN for America’s farmers, truckers, and hardworking families.” Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe said the order “provides commonsense flexibility to lower transportation costs and keep agriculture moving across the entire nation.” Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee thanked the President “for standing with the Tennesseans who feed & fuel our country,” and Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen said, “I appreciate that President Trump signed his order today in Nebraska.”
And the President may not be done. On the South Lawn Tuesday, a reporter asked whether the federal gas tax should be suspended after the diesel announcement. “Well, we’re thinking about that,” President Trump said.
