President Trump is working to bring another American home. In the Oval Office on Tuesday, a reporter asked whether the United States is on the verge of a deal to free Stephen Hubbard, the American teacher held in Russia. The President’s answer: “Just stick with me. Nobody else was able to do it.”
“I don’t want to talk about it, but everybody’s been after Hubbard for a long time, long before I got here,” Trump said, adding, “Just remember that question for a couple of days from now, okay?” Then he explained why: “Because I do things that nobody else can do. I hate to say it. So watch what happens.”
The President said he has gone straight to the top. “I’ve been talking to President Putin about Mr. Hubbard. I’ve been talking to him at length. I’ve asked him to release him,” he said. “Let’s see what happens.”
He drew a sharp line between his approach and the last administration’s. “We don’t give $6 billion like Biden,” Trump said, recalling the swap that sent back “the number one arms dealer ever in history” for a basketball player. “The deals we made were done by stupid people.”
“I’d love to get him back,” the President said. “It’s time. It’s time to have Mr. Hubbard back.” Patriots will be watching the next few days closely.
