WASHINGTON — The reporters wanted drama. President Donald J. Trump gave them a deal. Asked on the South Lawn Tuesday what gives him confidence that Vladimir Putin wants the war to end, the President answered in one line: “That’s what I’ve done my whole life is deals.”
“I think they both want it to end,” he continued. “There’s a lot of hatred there between the two of them. They both want it to end; they don’t know how to get there. We’re going to get them there.” And to anyone claiming America walked away from Ukraine: “We are helping them and we are sharing intel. We want the war to end, so we’re working with them and with Russia on getting the war to end.”
He also set the record straight on the diesel deal. “That’s a diesel deal not for us — that’s being released into the world,” the President said. “The world market suffered with high prices and when you knocked out diesel refineries, that’s not a great thing.” It is “a deal for the world,” he said, a way of getting oil out to the world market — “and it brought down prices.”
Both sides are still trading hits, the President acknowledged, “but it’ll all come to an end.” His bottom line for the day: “It’s going to all work out. You know why? It always does.” Watch Rapid Response 47’s video of the dealmaker at work.
