WASHINGTON — The Peacemaker in Chief delivered again on Sunday morning. President Donald J. Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to stop striking each other’s energy infrastructure. “Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine,” the President wrote. “Both parties have agreed. Do not break it! Thank you for your attention to this matter.” The White House shared the announcement at 9:36 a.m. Central, and it raced past 1.6 million views by the afternoon.
Kyiv answered within hours. “We discussed the energy ceasefire announced by President Trump,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote. “Ukraine supports the ceasefire, and it is important that Russia support it as well.” That same morning on ABC’s “This Week,” Zelensky had called an energy truce “the first step,” telling Moscow: “Don’t attack us… We will stop attack your diesel.” President Trump took that opening and locked it in.
For American families, this is about the pump. The President has pressed Kyiv for weeks to stop hitting Russian refineries, strikes that have driven diesel prices higher for the truckers and farmers who keep this country running. On Friday he struck a deal with President Vladimir Putin to put more than 300,000 tons of diesel on the market right away, 500,000 tons in November and 1 million tons after that, with Treasury clearing the way for the fuel to flow. An energy ceasefire protects that supply heading into winter.
On Saturday night at Joint Base Andrews, the President laid out the stakes plainly. “This is a war that should have never happened,” he said. “If I were president, it never would have happened. But President Zelensky could have solved this war, or he could have made a deal many times.” He said Zelensky “can’t raise the price of oil. He’s done enough,” and that Ukraine “should have an election.”
This is peace through strength at work. The President who has spent this term ending wars has now brought both sides to agree on energy, the first real step toward the peace he promised from day one. His message to Moscow and Kyiv could not be clearer: do not break it. Watch the Official White House video.
