President Donald J. Trump paused his Kansas rally Monday night to stand with a grieving community. “I also want to express our profound sympathy for the victims of the horrific car crash at the Stryker Sports Complex last weekend,” the President told the crowd in Park City. “We grieve for the beautiful lives that were lost and pray for those who were tragically injured. What a horrible event.”
He spoke directly to the families. “So to all victims and their families, may God be with you,” he said.
The President promised the full support of the federal government. “We want to get to the bottom of what happened. That was a terrible thing,” he said. “You have great law enforcement, but we’re going to give them whatever help they need. We want to find out what happened.”
Wichita police say that on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 17, a pickup truck drove onto a field during a youth soccer game at the Stryker Sports Complex in east Wichita. Six-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer, both of McPherson, were killed. Ten other people were hospitalized and are expected to recover. Police are still investigating how and why it happened, and the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case. No charges have been filed.
Kansas Sen. Roger Marshall called it “an unspeakable tragedy.” Sedgwick County’s Comcare crisis team is offering support to anyone affected; people in crisis can call or text 988, or call Comcare at 316-660-7500. Kansas is grieving, and its President is standing with it.
