WASHINGTON — Vice President JD Vance put the SAVE America fight on the record Tuesday. In a White House interview with the Daily Caller’s Vince Coglianese that debuted this morning, Vance said he and President Donald J. Trump have aggressively considered every option for taking the Senate floor and passing the White House voter-ID bill.
“The problem is that we have a number of Republican senators who vote more with Democrats than they do with their own party, and that is the issue,” Vance said. “If you could get 51 GOP senators, or, frankly, 50 senators plus a vice president to stick together, we could fire the parliamentarian. We could get rid of the filibuster. We could pass SAVE America Act and a bunch of amazing stuff too.”
He was just as clear that sitting in the chair is not the bottleneck. Vance said he and the President war-gamed that move to the detail and decided it would not get the bill through. “The problem is that you have four or five Republicans, and we all know who they are, who are going to stand with Democrats,” he said.
Then he did the math out loud. With 47 Democratic senators, overruling the parliamentarian still fails if four Republicans join them. “If I overrule the parliamentarian, they need four because if they get to 50, I break the tie and we win,” Vance said. He named them: Mitch McConnell, John Cornyn, Tom Tillis, and Lisa Murkowski. “They overrule the vice president. You have a fun little ceremonial battle that you lose.”
Patriots are not interested in a ceremony. Vance said the White House wants to win the battle, and that means replacing “mediocre Republican senators with good Republican senators.” That is the midterms argument in one sentence. Voter ID does not die because the votes are not there in the country. It stalls because a handful of Republicans will stand with Democrats when the Vice President is ready to break the tie.
President Trump and Vice President Vance have already thought the floor fight through. The remaining work is a Senate that will stick together and pass SAVE America. Tuesday, Vance said so without hedging.
