WASHINGTON — The record belongs to President Donald J. Trump. With his newest cover, TIME says the President has now appeared on its famous red border 56 times — more than any other individual in the magazine’s history. “With 56 appearances, Trump has now been on the cover of TIME more often than any other individual, surpassing President Richard Nixon, who held the title for more than half a century,” TIME wrote. Over the weekend, the White House released an Official behind-the-scenes video from the shoot.
The setting was pure Trump: the brand-new, 100-foot-wide helipad at the White House, where photographer Dan Winters captured the President on September 28, 2026. Standing outside the Residence, the President explained why he built it. Marine One used to set down in the dirt. “The happiest people were the pilots,” he told TIME. “They would land in the mud.” Not anymore.
The interview came at the end of another whirlwind week that TIME itself catalogued: a speech to the United Nations General Assembly, hosting Chinese President Xi Jinping and his delegation at the White House, an Air Force One flyover of the Texas–Tennessee football game, a visit to the Presidents Cup outside Chicago, and the announcement of a new steel mill in Iowa. That is the pace of the Golden Age.
TIME’s own summary of the man on its cover says it all: “a man who may be the most consequential leader of this century so far.” His first TIME cover came in 1989. Thirty-seven years later he holds the all-time record — and he is still keeping score, telling the magazine he has liked 17 of the 55 covers that came before this one. TIME published the full cover story by Eric Cortellessa along with the complete transcript of the interview.
The President also made clear what he will never change. When someone suggested knocking down the Oval Office and building a new one, he said he shut it down: “This is a special place.” And on his way out, he summed up his stewardship of the People’s House: “This whole place was a disgusting mess, and now it’s perfect.” Watch the Official White House behind-the-scenes video from the helipad shoot. Fifty-six covers. One President. History made.
