Secretary of State Marco Rubio is done apologizing for America’s record on Ukraine. Speaking with reporters in India on Wednesday, he set the record straight. “By the way, we’re no longer going to be defensive about this topic, okay?” Rubio said.

“If it were not for the assistance of the United States, including under the Trump administration, there would be no Ukraine right now,” the Secretary said. “Ukraine as a sovereign state would not exist.”

Rubio gave Ukraine’s soldiers their due. “That doesn’t mean the bravery of the Ukrainian fighters should not be highlighted, because they have absolutely very bravely fought for their country and done extraordinary things with the aid that’s been provided to them, standing up to a much larger country,” he said.

“But let’s be very clear there,” Rubio continued. “There would be no Ukraine today, were it not for the assistance of the United States,” which has “supplied Ukraine in the billions of dollars, going back to the Biden administration and going through this administration as well.”

The message landed on a busy day for President Trump’s peace push. His envoy, Steve Witkoff, met Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg, and Russia freed American Stephen Hubbard with no swap. America is leading, and Secretary Rubio wants the world to remember who kept Ukraine standing.
