WASHINGTON — Some wins deserve a second lap — especially when an entire state lines up to cheer. On Wednesday, September 30, the White House posted an ICYMI roundup of President Donald J. Trump’s Mesabi Metallics announcement: a $15 billion steel complex coming to Iowa — framed as the largest steel plant ever built in the United States — with 1,750 new permanent jobs, up to 6,000 construction jobs, and an estimated $95 billion in U.S. economic output over construction and the first decade of operations.
This is not a rehash of Monday’s announce tape. It is the Iowa chorus — governors, senators, House members, and plant executives putting America First manufacturing on the record for the midterms map. Gov. Kim Reynolds thanked the President for bringing steel manufacturing back and called the project transformational for national security, high-paying jobs, and a reliable supply of American-made steel. Attorney General Brenna Bird called it the largest steel plant project in U.S. history and credited Trump’s commitment to American jobs for American citizens.
The Senate and House joined the parade. Sen. Chuck Grassley: “GR8 NEWS” — $15 billion mill in Iowa, America First, building on Working Families Tax Cuts. Sen. Joni Ernst: proud to join the President announcing the historic investment and more than 1,700 permanent Iowa jobs. Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Ashley Hinson, and Zach Nunn hammered the same theme — Lee County revitalization, skilled-trades pipelines, and manufacturing homecoming after years of watching jobs leave.
Industry said the quiet part out loud. Mesabi Metallics Chairman Rewant Ruia thanked the President for restoring the importance of building things in America — American ore on American railroads to an American steel plant powered by American energy and run by an American workforce. CEO Joe Broking tied Minnesota Iron Range DRI-grade pellets to advanced DRI-to-EAF steelmaking in Iowa for defense, autos, shipbuilding, appliances, energy, and infrastructure. EXIM Chairman John Jovanovic called it private capital rebuilding America’s economic security. AISI’s Kevin Dempsey credited Trump’s Section 232 steel tariffs with energizing iron and steel investment.
Race to the Mid-terms politics does not get clearer. Democrats lectured heartland towns about “global supply chains” while mills went cold. Trump puts a $15 billion plant on the Iowa map, fills the Oval with steelmakers, and watches Reynolds, Grassley, Ernst, and the House delegation sell the win in their own words. Patriots hear paychecks, apprenticeships, and American steel — not another coastal seminar.
Watch the Official White House Iowa steel announcement video. When midterms voters ask who brought the largest steel plant in American history to Lee County, the answer is not a task force. It is President Trump — and an Iowa chorus that is not whispering about it.
